You can get .co.nr and .tk domains for free considering you have to put their ads /banners on the first page of the website .. Both of them offers a domain forwarding and clocking service and you cannot have control of domain like changing dns , locking etc .

Never got any free domain yet. an you tell me , whether they belongs to .com or .net.

sometimes people give away domain free on blog contest. so i suggest you to try for them:)

I have seen some body giving away domain names on a contest on DP. Other than that, I am not sure of any free domain provides. Even if their are going to be some, there is going to be some catch in the deal. Better clarify all the conditions before you get those.
