Am i right in thinking that a domain registrar, a resller for that matter is just basically a game of whos most popular, gets the customer? Since theres very little between most registars, a $1-3 and a design, support isnt really a consideration for most, so is it really the simple case of design/price?

No
For me support is very important.
After using www.registerfly.com now renamed regfly.com and having problems with them and their ticket support system support became #1. They didn't renew a domain and it went into redemption period. They kept on deleting my support tickets, asking for the same info over and over. Never resolved the screwup.
I ended up backordering (my own domain!) at www.registerdonkey.com to get it back. lucky to have gotten it back. These guys have live support and I was able to get them on the phone and at least ask them my options. Lesson learned. whenever you make a move or change with a domain. CHECK THE WHOIS INFO. You can then know if your registrar has fulfilled their obligation and get on to of the situation if hey haven't.

yes, i do agree with darkmannn, especially, domain names look as private fortune, if you just care about price, i think you'll regret,i have this experience of renewing my domain names, and then the registrar was bankrupt, so you should a good registrar, like todaynic, i have been using it for several years , deserve your trust, especailly dot cn $1.5 per year, so go to....
