I've read articles referencing an activity where people register scores of domain names and monitor them for a three or four day "grace period" to see how much traffic they generate (type-in traffic?). They then cancel the registration of those domain names that don't perform (don't generate traffic) during their registrar's grace period so their testing doesn't cost them anything.
What I don't understand is where does this potential traffic come from? Don't they have to get spidered by a search engine before they would even have potential to achieve traffic? Are they slapping up some content on these parked domains or is the traffic just generated via content in their domain name?
How does this work?

There is some type grace period, I think 5 days where you can technically return a domain... The clause was not created for what it is being used for mostly, which are these domain horders.... But there is a grace period for returning domains, which is being grossly abused....
They are looking for traffic names like generic .com's which geet type in traffic.... There is also expired names with backlinks which get traffic... When they drop the names, they get listed here: www.refunddomains.com - You can scoop up some good domains on that site...
