I am in the process of restructuring my websites. Currently domains and webspace are handled by the same company, but I came to thinking that I have to change this...
Is it right that I can buy hosting from X and then add the domain from a cheap domain-seller? (Without any 30X redirects, framesets, etc!)
Is that what most of you do? I'd like to understand the way people here on the forum do it and what the experiences are- running a midsized website.
Any further recommendations welcome!

You don't have to host your domain where you register it. When you register your domain name you use your hosting companies dns servers to point your domain to the hosting company.
The rest is the same as hosting and registering domain name within the same company...

Just as Cadianda says..its a simple process to just point the domain elsewhere. I guess another question that you really didn't elaborate on is..why?..Is it a customer service issue with your host? I personally have domains and hosting with one company and have never experienced a problem.
Just wondering

In my opinion, It's always better use different companies to register your domain and to host it (because of the fact there is no good company which offers both the services at their finest). That would have cleared your doubt that you don't have to use the same company to register your domains and to host them.
I use NameCheap to register my domains and Hostgator to host the websites on them.

Web hosting is a service that offers you a web space to house your website, whereas domain name is just a locator to help people find your website. That's why you need to register a domain name in conjunction with a web hosting service.
