As a newbie, usually you're looking for the cheapest price out there and usually you'd get a .info domain. If ever you have some plans on your site, .info might be a wrong choice. People usually think this domain as unprofessional, what do you think?

I dont think that its unprofessional but you should go with it only if it is some information related web page...

I think it depends.. if the website just does not fit right with ".info" then, yes, it can look unprofessional. If the website is an information resource, than I think its ok.

I agree that .info works well if the site is strickly an informational source..

I saw some discussion on other forum that someone was selling a .info site with a good traffic and yet he was criticized why he chose .info. If only it was a .com the prospect seller would have bought it easily.

I think .info is not unprofessional it is that its worth less, because there was one point where they were giving away .info domains for free and now its is only $1.99 for one, but I still own about 19 .info domains

Wow 19 .info, what kind of sites you have developed with those? Are they of the same topics such as a network?

I think .info domains if it contains mainly informational content, it should still be worth some $$$. But just wondering, how well does these .info domains rank on Google? I don't think they rank well on Google, whats your take?

I think if they don't rank well on the engines, their value would be very low. Also one thing about .info domains being so cheap that they seemed to have been used for domain spamming?

Extreamly good points..... That's right.... They were free for some time and are now very cheap and I personally know some spammers using them (perfect for the spammers cause they can buy them in bulk, cheap, and set up scraper sites and MFA's) ..... I suspect (because I really don't know for sure) that Google looks extra close at the backlinks to these domains so that it can properly rank them.....

Hm, interesting. I just got into internet marketing a few weeks ago. I didn't know much and I didn't want to spend too much money on domains (already spent 150$ on hosting), so I bought around 10 .info domains.

Can anyone confirm that .info domains are ranked worse than .com domains?

I've heard from a webmaster that it does not matter in terms of ranking, whats the most important was your pages and content.

WOW $150, what did you spend it on, may I ask. There is really no such thing as ranked worse, but because .info domains were given out free they are not worth as much, as .com. But I still have 19 sites on various topics, some blogs, adsense pages, and parking on the high PR 3 -6 sites

I actually spent 166$ on hosting. I paid for 24 months in advance ;D

I'm glad to see that my .info domains are not totally worthless. I guess I'll have to get some .com domains though. I don't want my main sites to be looked down on just because it's on an .info domain.

Your basically right, .info is usually not what you want but sometimes its ok depending on what the purpose of the site is.

Agreed.

I disagree with you about .info domains.

Many people underestimate this extension but in my experience it is the best extension for SEO purposes. Also the end user market is good as compared to .biz, .us and .org domains.

.info's are cheap domain names that you can buy anywhere from .25c-2$ I would not suggest getting these unless you are getting a 3-4 letter domain as those seem to increase in value as the .info's will run out sometime. Just not as fast as the .com's are currently running out right now.

I'm planning to sell new custom created websites actually and thinking of just purchasing .info just to make a sale and the buyer could still change it to .com as it has no traffic or revenue yet, what do you think?

Depending on what you are planning to use the site for, .info domains should be fine. In the end the extension of your domain has nothing to do with your rankings on the search engines - rather it is the content and marketing that determine your success.

The only downside is that they may not thing of the .info extension... it seems .com has been burnt in our minds as a domain name... you may just risk losing some visitors because the cannot remember the extension of your website.

I have several new sites for sale and thinking to register .info and just advised the buyer to just register a new .com as its still new so no traffic yet.

I uso .info sites just for building landing pages (adwords).

I don't like to use them for other thing.

I don't think they do very good in terms of traffic, search engine rankings (Google does have some good .info rankings though), etc.

I think .com is a more worthwhile investment. I haven't experienced any good effects with my .info domains yet. :(

They need good inbound links in order for Google to treat them right...

It's not necessarily the search engine rankings I'm talking about, it's the failure of the TLD itself with end-users. Visitors don't really remember the extension that well, and to many ".info" is just odd. :p

Well, right now I am banking on the rise of the .info TLD..... So you'd understand why I would disagree...... I think it is good bet if the name itself is good.... I think much can be accomplished depending on what you put into it.... I created -- years ago, and to my surprise, it has been a very successful project to date...

With larger companies like www.mta.info moving to this TLD, the future is bright.

There are quite a few people who believe, dot info domains rank poorly in search engines and are being labeled as spam domains by search engines and Google in particular.

while it is true that spammers and scrappers love dot info domains, because they cost next to nothing for the first year’s registration. There are people like me, who use dot info domains for legitimate purposes, and at least for now there is no data to suggest that Google or for that matter, any other search engine is discounting the value of dot info domains.

I have a few .info domains myself, I have used them to create a few sites that I will sell in the next few days :D

I think .info or .com don't matters much

what matters is content in the site. :)

I agree. I also believe that any site that ends in .biz is some sort of scam site. That has always been my belief since there is a major flood of scams with those extensions. I think .com .net and .org are pretty much the best ones besides location based ones such as .ie (ireland) .co.uk (UK) .de (germany) etc..

As far as I can find from google and Digital Point, .info is as good as .com. What matters is quality back links. And content matters too. Quality content rules.

Im not sure, but i did see some .info domains advertised on the subway, which costs around 50,000 dollars.

Not sure why they didnt get a better .com.
