What is a surefire way to catch a dropping domain?

The domain name is currently in redemption period and the registrar at which the domain expired is INTERCOSMOS MEDIA GROUP, INC. D/B/A DIRECTNIC.COM.

The domain is the name of a friend (like firstnamelastname.com) and for personal reasons I would prefer not to say it...

There is no surefire way to register a dropping domain. You can backorder the domain after doing a little research regarding where the domain is registered. Probably this article ezinearticles.com/?How-to-Register-an-Expiring-Domain&id=57507 can help you a bit.

Yea, best bet is to just try and backorder it and hope you catch it..... There really is no surefire way.... If the name was something you had to have you might try backordering it at several registrars.
