COM and NET domains drop each day between 11am PST and 2pm PST (the domains are deleted in batches between these times).

I'll see if I can dig up the exact times for a few of the other gTLDs and ccTLDs.

Great post, but what if I wanted to purchase one? What's the procedure? Do I have to go through an "auction" site? I really would rather just purchase myself...
There are 2 ways to snap up an expired domain: through a backorder, or through an open auction. The path you will need to follow is dependent on the expiring domain's registrar (some registrars simply delete their expired domains, while others keep them and sell them in a pre-release auction).

A "backorder" is a service provided by eNom.com, Pool.com, SnapNames.com, and GoDaddy.com who have a complex network of servers & registrars that try to register expiring domains the split second it becomes available. They charge between $20-$90 per successful backorder, so you only pay if they capture the name for you. Sometimes, there is more than 1 person who backorders a particular domain with one of these companies. In this situation, assuming the domain is captured by them, the domain goes into a private auction where only those who backordered the domain can bid on it. The highest bidder wins. If there is only 1 person who backordered the domain, and they capture it, you only pay the backorder fee.

All domains I list can be acquired through a backorder, as they are being deleted from the registry.
