Want to do us a favor and give the question a little more clearly? Because what you are asking I can answer but I don't think it is the answer you are looking for...What happens is then is it transfered to the other person's account for them to do what they wish. See I bet that wasn't the answer you were looking for please state your question more clearly.

The domain becomes available to the public for registration......... These days it is likely to be picked up by a drop catcher first though.....
The domain goes on an expiring list and it usually picked up after it expires, or the minuete it is "dropped"..... If the domain is any good, the drop catcher will keep the domain, other wise they will release it within a few days due to a loop in the registrar laws...

I agree --- Auto Renew is a necessity..... You must choose auto-renew and you must keep track of your creedit card expirations and which domains they are associated with...

Usually the server warns you to renew it 2 - 3 days before it expires...then you can prevent some one else getting it then..
Oh I just learned that auto renew option is that important then. Especially if your site has gained some traffic and will just be given to somebody else.

Yes you can sell the expired domain. That is no problem.
When the domain expired you must pay back to continue.
